“Many patients describe it as a literal weight lifted off their chest. They often wish they had done it years earlier.”
WAUSAU, Wis. – For many women, breast reduction surgery is about more than appearance. It’s a life-changing procedure that addresses physical discomfort and improves quality of life for those living with chronic pain caused by disproportionately large breasts.
Breast reduction surgery has seen an increase in demand nationwide. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were 76,031 aesthetic breast reduction procedures performed in 2023, a 7 percent increase from the previous year.
At Aspirus Health, that trend reflects the growing number of women seeking relief from daily pain and limitations caused by excess breast tissue. Dr. Elizabeth Renaker-Jansen, DO, FACOS, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, frequently sees patients who have been managing neck, back, and shoulder pain for years before seeking surgical help. “Most patients come to me because they’re dealing with daily discomfort,” said Dr. Renaker-Jansen. “They’ve often been told by their physician, chiropractor, or physical therapist that the size of their chest might be contributing to chronic pain.”
In addition to musculoskeletal issues, some women experience rashes beneath the breasts and difficulty with exercise or basic movement. “Even walking, running on a treadmill, or lifting weights can become difficult when your breasts dominate your upper torso,” she said.
During a consultation, Dr. Renaker-Jansen discusses symptoms, performs an exam, and walks patients through what the surgery involves and what they can expect during recovery. Most patients return to light activity within four to six weeks, although complete healing and optimal results may take six to twelve months.
“Patients often feel relief as soon as they wake up,” she said. “They’re no longer feeling that constant pull on their back and shoulders. Many go on to exercise more, lose weight, and feel like themselves again.”
Dr. Renaker-Jansen encourages anyone considering the procedure to schedule a consultation. “I often hear from women in their 40s, 50s, or 60s who say, ‘I wish I had done this 20 years ago.’ They feel so good after surgery and want that time back.”
