The fun-filled evening Candlelight Hike Festival returns to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Schmeeckle Reserve this May.
The event will be held Friday, May 2, from 7-9:30 p.m. This year’s festival theme is “Fantastic Critters and Where to Find Them.” It is open to the public, free of charge, but donations are appreciated.
The community is welcome to explore torch-lit trail loops throughout the reserve. UW-Stevens Point students will present character skits at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. at the Pankowski Friends Amphitheater. Visitors also will have the opportunity to roast marshmallows around the fireplace and explore family-friendly hands-on activities throughout the evening.
Parking is available near the reserve’s Visitor Center, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point. Learn more about the festival and volunteer opportunities at friendsofschmeeckle.org/candlelight-hike-festivals/.
Family Nature Programs will also be offered this month. The free, open to the public programs are led by UW-Stevens Point students studying environmental education and interpretation. Be prepared to go outside and dress for the weather. Meet at the Visitor Center, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point, unless otherwise noted. No registration is required.
The following programs will be offered in May:
- “Bandits of the Woods,” Friday, May 9, 10-11 a.m., Menzel Pavilion. Learn about racoons on a nature walk while discussing these masked bandits and their habitats, diet and predators.
- “Nutty Neighbors: Understanding Squirrels,” Friday, May 9, 6-7 p.m. Explore how squirrels worldwide compare to those in Schmeeckle Reserve.
You can contact the Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center by calling 715-346-4992 or emailing schmeeckle@uwsp.edu. Reasonable accommodation for special needs will be made with advance notice. Schmeeckle Reserve, a 280-acre nature reserve on the UW-Stevens Point campus, is operated by the College of Natural Resources to protect and restore ecosystems, serve as an outdoor classroom for learning and provide outdoor recreation opportunities.
